Dogs love smelling a lot of things. The same tree over and over, other pets, human butts, and a ton of other things that you may find gross (read our "What Are They Sniffing For" blog).
But what smells do dogs hate?
Citrus
Humans love the smell of citrus, but dogs find incredibly offensive. It's often used to keep dogs away from certain areas. Check grooming products for citrus scents, and your pups will thank you!
Chili Peppers
Chili's can actually cause dogs mild irritation in the nose and eyes. When the seeds are removed (the seeds are toxic), it is a known deterrent.
Ammonia
Cleaning products contain ammonia and can cause serious irritation. It must be used carefully if at all, and make sure keep your pets away from the areas you are using it on.
Rubbing Alcohol/ Isopropyl Alcohol
This is highly toxic for dogs. Breathing vapors can actually cause serious nervous system disorders, nausea, and vomiting.
Perfume
The main ingredient and all perfume is isopropyl alcohol. Scented deodorants are even too strong for dogs, which is why many veterinarians have a scent free policies in their offices. Your dog loves the way you smell and hates when you mask your earthiness with stinky perfume.
Moth Balls
This is the least safe repellent solution. They are extremely toxic if ingested.
Nail Polish
With their millions of scent receptors they can detect and smell chemicals. Nail polish contains a high number of chemicals including formaldehyde, nitrocellulose, isopropyl alcohol and acetate (also in nail polish remover) and it's extremely toxic for dogs.
